Just before I left Shanghai, I heard that Chiang Kai-she. placed under arrest Tam To-yuen and Tai Ngok, two comanding officers, for having refused to move their troops. This shows disruption in Chiang's camp.

The reason why Sun Quan-fang did not mobilise earlier was that he was afraid of defection on the part of Esia Chiao, and of attack from Chang Chung-chang. I believe that Sun was sin- cere in his declaration to work together with du Pei-fa. At one time there was a rumour that the Northern provinces wanted to work for u's downfall. This rumour had some foundation, because some of Wu's more important lieutenants showed signs of insubordination; but I believe that all misunderstandings amon: these men have now been removed. They will now fight together against Chiang Kai-shek,

Chang Tso-lin has also definitely praised to assist Sun and to co-operate with him, now that he is satisfied that Sun is using all efforts to remove Chiang Kai-shek and Bolshevism.

It is believed that there is an understanding between Tan: Sang-chi and Sun Chuan-fans, thereby the former is not to assist: Chiang Kai-shek actively, his reward being the Tuchunship of Hunan. It has been reported that Tang Seng-chi has already defied the orders of Chiang Kai-shek on more than one occasion.

Sun attaches very great importance to the proposed attack

on Kwongtung from the South, for as soon as he launches his general attack on Kwongtung from the North, he expects simul- taneous action from Ngai Bong-ping on the South side, so as to divide Chiang's strength. He also considers the capture of Kwongtung of paramount importance as it is the principal base of Bolshevism and its amies.

Chang Tao-lin, Sun Chuan-fang as well as Ju Pei-fu realise more and more the importance of eradicating the evil of Bolshe- viam from China, They consider that is long as the Red Russians
